First Catholic preacher in
Pancevo started his mission in May 1st 1781. When Benedict Wolfgang Heidinger
came with prince Eugen Savoi’s army. Franciscan conventualist Norbert Scribanio was then
appointed as a priest by the emperor’s administration in Banat. In 1719, he wrote the
first chronicle of Pancevo which was called "Protocolom". There is no reliable
information about its destiny. It is tough that one part of it is kept in Arad and the
other one is placed in Budapest.
The first religious service was held in the
"apartment" of count S. Marsy which was redecorated into church-chapel in 1722.
Sanctuary and altar which were as big as the church were added. The former Turkish houses,
which stood next to the church, were redecorated into monastery rooms with a dinning-room
and a kitchen. The buildings of church-chapel and monastery were destroyed by the attack of
the Turcs, and so the first religious service was held under a tent and later on in
barracks and private houses.
The house was restored in1747. But two
years later the tower fell under the gust of hurricane and destroyed the boat which was
built unstable. The church was again renovated together with the monastery building
constructed next to it which had the form of reversed letter L.In 1768. the church went
through bigger architecture changes- the altar room and the sanctuaries were widened and a
new tower was lifted above the church entrance and the walls were decorated with
stukadecration. During the Turkish invasion Catholic church was used as a stable and both
church furniture and church trappings were pondered so that it was again renovated
together with the convict. Since thenits chronicle was less tempestuous. On the contrarz
it was only enriched. The church and the convict were built in1758/59. they were shown the
map of Pancevo in 1761 and they presented then the nucleus out of which the town center
was organized eastward with all its public buildings, cavalry’s barracks and the
administration. In 1853. the chapel was built on the south side of Catholic church, and in
1858. Church tower was covered in copper and the church was dedicated again. Building up
of a new residence and renovation of the monastery started the same year. In 1860.
